Materials Characterization

Composites are made of two or more constituents each with their own mechanical properties creating a single material having its own particular mechanical properties. Composite materials end up having great strength and stiffness without the extra weight as conventional structural materials, such as steel. With these types of properties composites have found their way into a multitude of uses, a majority in the aerospace and automotive industry. Conventional composites are made up of a fiber and a matrix system bound together into one entity.

Knowing the parts that make up a composite is integral to supplying an industry and meeting their required specifications. Although computer simulations are becoming a more prominent, cheaper alternative to experimental testing, values being inputted into material testing simulations are found from real world experimental material characterization.

With Sunstrands material characterization facility we are able to meet demand and aid customers in designing materials for their applications, giving complete mechanical analyses, and recommendations with our material systems in order to fulfill customer requirements.
