A woody perennial grass that tends to grow in tropical and sub-tropical regions is now becoming widely used for residential landscaping purposes with whole nurseries dedicated to the growth and cultivation of bamboo. Requiring almost no pesticides, fertilizers or additional watering, bamboo cane can grow and be harvested without the need to be replanted. There are over 1,000 species of bamboo that grow in either a running single stemmed line or a densely clumped bush. Today’s uses for bamboo include building materials, fabrics/clothing, cooking, agriculture and even instruments.

Sunstrand’s Unique Approach to Bamboo

Where most structural applications utilize the entire cane, Sunstrand’s proprietary fiber extraction method allows single fibers to be utilized in composite applications.

The use of bamboo fibers used to be limited due to a lack of scalable techniques to produce consistently strong fibers and counteract bamboo’s natural tendency to absorb water from the air and direct contact. However, our novel fiber extraction and treatment process makes bamboo fiber competitive with glass fibers in a variety of configurations, due to our bamboo fibers being stronger while also less dense.

Here at Sunstrand we take bamboo and process it into fiber. Our fiber is used to make nonwoven mats that could be used for face masks, napkins, food grade packaging and even mattresses. Because of its antibacterial nature as well as the soft feel and absorptive properties, bamboo fabric is a fantastic choice. We are constantly innovating, and discovering new uses for our products, to make more and more everyday items both sustainable and efficient through Sunstrand. Our products have applications in the construction, automotive, electrical and electronics, cosmetics, recreation, and various other industries.

Bamboo, like all of our products, is rapidly-renewable, recyclable, and biodegradable. Our SUNstainability PromiseTM guarantees quality and ethical, environmentally consciously sourced products.
